HOW TO DEAL WITH A BOSTON BRACE

A back brace may be prescribed for you after a spinal injury or surgery in order to limit movement. It can also be prescribed for you if you have Scoliosis or other Spinal deformities. It is not always enjoyable to wear a brace. Here are some tips on how you can deal with it:

  • Expect to be Uncomfortable: Expecting difficulties or discomfort will help you to accept the discomfort when you put on the brace. Be sure to note any pressure that you feel and the exact part where you feel such pressure and notify the P&O specialist immediately. Also notify your P&O Specialist if you feel pain. Extreme pain can lead to swelling and pressure sores.
  • Learn how to wear your brace: Initially, the P&O professional will help you put on your brace. But you will definitely need to learn how to wear it yourself. Watch carefully when others help you strap it and try wearing it yourself. Practicing in front of a mirror is recommended.
  • Check out for pressure sores: it is advisable to check your skin for signs of pressure sores. If the brace is uncomfortable, you might develop pressure sores in some areas. It is also advisable to wear simple tops and singlets before putting on the brace to avoid direct contact with the skin.
  • Prepare for change in activities: Definitely, there would be changes in your activities whenever you are putting on your brace. Move slowly and reduce the flexibility in your torso area. Avoid bending over to pick up items on the floor, rather, try squatting. Also note the way you lie to sleep. Be sure that you are comfortable when sleeping with a brace on.
  • Dress in a comfortable outfit: It is advisable to modify your dress to make yourself comfortable. You can try wearing something a bit bigger to cover up, if you feel shy especially during the first few weeks.

In all you do, always remember: “A life of probity is worth living!”
