The following tips will help you prevent prosthetic limb damage:
- Visit a P&O center at least once a year: The prosthesis is a device, no matter how cosmetically appealing it looks, it still needs maintenance because it is not a part of your body. The socket especially, needs to be replaced every 2-8years depending on the quality of the prosthesis and how you use it.
- Check out for warning signs: If you notice skin irritations or rashes on your stump, it is a warning sign that should not be overlooked. Also, if you feel heavy when you try to walk or have pains, notify your prosthetist immediately.
- Take care of your Prosthesis: It is recommended that you clean your prosthesis daily using a cloth soaked in warm water and antimicrobial soap, and air dry it before wearing it again. Don’t soak the prosthesis in water. It can cause damage to it.
- Stop using the Prosthesis if it causes open sores or blisters: If your prosthesis causes you to develop sores and blisters, discontinue use of the prosthesis immediately. It could be caused if the prosthesis is too tight. It is advisable to return it to the prosthetist for adjustments. If you continue using it, it can lead to serious injury and infections.
