Every Commonwealth scholarship season, I see the same confusion.
Someone says, “Commonwealth Scholarship is open.”
Then comes the very reasonable question:
“Which Commonwealth?”
Because there isn't just one.
Two that applicants commonly come across are the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship and the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.
Both can fund a master's degree in the UK.
Both are administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC).
Both are aimed at applicants from eligible Commonwealth countries.
Both have a strong focus on development impact.
And yet, they are not the same scholarship.
The names are similar enough to confuse anybody, so if you've been mixing them up, I understand. But before you start an application, you need to know which one you're actually applying for.
Let me explain it without making it more complicated than it needs to be.
The Simplest Difference
If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this:
Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship = you apply through an approved nominating body.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarship = you apply for specific approved master's courses offered by participating UK universities.
That's the main difference.
Everything else becomes easier to understand once you get that.
So, What Is the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship?
The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship is for eligible candidates from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries who want to undertake a full-time taught master's degree in the UK and would otherwise be unable to afford the study.
For the 2027/28 cycle, applications open on 8 September 2026 and close on 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST.
But here's the important part.
You cannot simply apply directly to the CSC and consider your job done.
You must apply through an approved nominating body.
Depending on your country and circumstances, this may be a national nominating agency or another organisation approved by the CSC.
And the nominating body may have its own application procedure and deadline.
So when you see the CSC deadline, don't automatically assume that's the only date you need to know.
Your nominating agency might be standing somewhere with another deadline waiting for you. 😅

Then What Is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship takes a different route.
Instead of the scholarship being available across the broader Commonwealth Master’s framework, participating UK universities put forward specific master's courses for the Shared Scholarship scheme.
That word — specific — matters.
You cannot decide:
“I want to study MSc Something Something at University X, so I'll apply for Commonwealth Shared.”
First check whether that particular course is actually on the approved Shared Scholarship course list for that year.
If it isn't there, Commonwealth Shared is not funding it.
For the 2027/28 cycle, the CSC says candidate applications are expected to open in early November 2026, with applications expected to close in mid-December 2026. The final list of participating courses is expected in November.
So at the moment, if somebody tells you that the 2027/28 Shared Scholarship application is already open, please verify what they're talking about before you start clicking links.

That's why simply saying “I'm applying for Commonwealth” doesn't tell me enough.
Which one?
The Course Choice Is Where People Really Need to Pay Attention
This is probably the practical difference applicants should understand most clearly.
With the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, you are working from a defined list of participating universities and eligible courses.
The university and course are therefore central to the scholarship from the beginning.
With the main Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, you have more scope in your proposed study choices, provided they satisfy the CSC's requirements.
That doesn't mean you should start selecting courses like you're adding items to an online shopping basket.
Your course still needs to make sense.
If your application says you have spent years working towards one particular development problem and then your chosen master's degree appears to have arrived from another planet, the reader is going to notice.
Choose something you can genuinely explain.
What About Applying to the University?
This is another place where applicants get caught.
A scholarship application and university admission are not automatically the same application.
For Commonwealth Shared, universities have their own admission procedures for their eligible courses. You need to read the instructions for the university you're applying to.
For the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, the CSC also advises candidates to apply to their proposed universities around the time of the scholarship application or as soon as possible afterwards.
In either case, don't assume that because you've submitted something to the CSC, a university somewhere has magically received an admission application bearing your name.
Check.
Are the Eligibility Requirements the Same?
They overlap considerably, but you shouldn't assume they are identical.
Both programmes are aimed at applicants from eligible Commonwealth countries who would otherwise be unable to afford postgraduate study in the UK.
Academic requirements are also similar in important respects.
But there are scheme-specific conditions.
For example, the current Shared Scholarship criteria include a condition that applicants must not have studied or worked for one academic year or more in a high-income country, as defined by the CSC.
That is why I wouldn't advise anyone to read the eligibility page for one scheme and assume it covers the other.
Read the page for the scholarship you're actually applying for.
It's ten minutes of reading that can save you hours of preparing an application you're not eligible to submit.
And Yes, Nigeria Is Eligible for Both
For the current 2027/28 information, Nigeria is included among the eligible countries for both schemes.
But eligibility by nationality is only the beginning.
Being Nigerian does not automatically mean you're eligible.
You still need to satisfy the academic, residency, financial and other requirements of the particular scholarship.
For Shared, your chosen course also needs to be an approved Shared Scholarship course.
Which One Is “Better”?
Neither.
This isn't Manchester United versus Arsenal. You don't need to pick a side. 😂
The better question is:
Which one fits my circumstances and the master's programme I want to pursue?
You might find an excellent course on the Commonwealth Shared list that fits your background and plans beautifully.
Apply.
You might find that your preferred course isn't offered under Shared but fits the main Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship route.
Explore that.
And if you're eligible for more than one scholarship opportunity, read the individual rules and decide what applications make sense for you.
Don't become emotionally loyal to a scholarship name.
The goal is the education and what you're going to do with it afterwards.
The Development Impact Part Doesn't Disappear
Whichever route you're considering, don't ignore development impact.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission isn't simply looking for people who would enjoy studying in the UK.
The scholarships exist within a development framework.
Your application needs to make sense beyond:
“I have always dreamed of studying abroad.”
That's understandable, but it isn't enough.
What problem are you interested in?
Why does it matter in your context?
What have you already seen, experienced, researched or worked on that connects you to it?
What do you need to learn?
Why this master's degree?
And what could realistically change because you gained that knowledge?
You don't need to solve your country's entire development agenda in one essay.
In fact, please don't try.
A focused problem you genuinely understand is much easier to believe than an application promising to transform healthcare, education, poverty, unemployment and climate change before lunch.
One More Difference: Timing
For 2027/28, the two application periods are not running together.
The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship opens first, on 8 September 2026, and closes on 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST.
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is expected to open in early November 2026 and close around mid-December.
That means if you're interested in both, don't sit around waiting for “Commonwealth applications” to open.
One may already be moving while you're waiting for the other.
Scholarship season has started.
If You're Interested in Commonwealth Shared, What Should You Do Now?
You don't need to write an application for a course that hasn't even been confirmed as eligible yet.
What you can do is get your house in order.
Check the current eligibility requirements.
Get your transcripts together.
Think about potential referees.
Look carefully at your career direction.
Work out what kind of master's programme would genuinely help you get there.
And start thinking about your development impact.
Then, when the official Shared course list comes out in November, you can search with some direction instead of opening 37 university tabs and developing a new personality by midnight.
The Bit I Want You to Remember
When you see Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, think:
Nominating agency.
When you see Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, think:
Participating university + specific approved course.
That little distinction will save you a surprising amount of confusion.
Both are excellent opportunities.
Both can fund postgraduate study in the UK.
But they have different routes, different course structures and different application timelines.
So before you ask, “How do I apply for Commonwealth?”
First ask:
“Which Commonwealth Scholarship am I talking about?”
That is a much better place to start.
