Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship 2027–2028: Fully Funded Study in the UK

If a fully funded master's degree in the UK is part of your plan for 2027, put this one on your radar.

Applications for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027–2028 open on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.

The scholarships are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC).

They are designed for talented applicants from eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Successful candidates will undertake a full-time taught master's degree at a UK university, beginning in September or October 2027.

And one important thing before we continue:

This is NOT the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.

The names are similar, but the application routes are different. Please don't mix them up and start applying with the wrong instructions. 😅

Who Can Apply?

To be considered for a Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship for 2027–2028, you must:

Be a citizen of, have refugee status granted by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
Be available to begin your studies in the UK in September 2027.
By September 2027, normally hold at least an upper second-class (2:1) first degree, or a lower second-class degree together with a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a master's degree.
Be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.
Provide all required supporting documents in the correct format.

There is no age limit set by the CSC, although applicants should check whether their employer has any restrictions relating to study leave.

The CSC also provides a contextualised nomination route for some disabled applicants who do not hold a 2:1 undergraduate degree but can demonstrate their potential to contribute to international development. Applicants interested in this route should check the official guidance carefully.

Is Nigeria Eligible?

Yes.

Nigeria is one of the eligible countries for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship 2027–2028.

Other eligible countries currently include Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Dominica, Eswatini, Fiji, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Saint Helena, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu and Zambia.

What Does the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship Cover?

This is a fully funded scholarship.

For the 2027–2028 scheme, the scholarship provides financial support including:

Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and a return flight at the end of the scholarship.
Full approved tuition fees.
A monthly living allowance of £1,712, or £2,000 per month if you study at a university in the London metropolitan area, at the rates currently published by the CSC.
A study travel grant towards approved study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
Additional support may be available for eligible Scholars with disabilities.

How Is This Different From the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?

This distinction is important.

The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship uses a nominating agency system.

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, on the other hand, is offered for selected master's courses at participating UK universities, with the cost shared between the CSC and those universities.

For the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, you cannot simply submit your CSC application and assume that's the end of the process.

You need to understand the nomination route.

You Must Apply Through a Nominating Body

This is probably the most important part of this post.

Applicants must apply through an approved nominating body.

These can include national nominating agencies and selected non-governmental organisations or charitable bodies.

Each nominator manages its own selection process and may have:

Its own application procedure

You must satisfy both the CSC requirements and your nominating agency's requirements and deadlines.

How to Apply for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship

The application process has two important parts.

First, you must submit your scholarship application through the CSC's online application system, CSC Central.

Second, you must apply through an eligible nominating body.

The nominating body conducts its own selection process and puts forward a limited number of candidates to the CSC.

Being nominated does not automatically mean you have won the scholarship. The CSC makes the final selection from the pool of nominated candidates.

The participating nominators are expected to submit their nominations to the CSC by December 2026.

What Will You Need to Write About?

This isn't an application where you simply upload your degree certificate and CV and call it a day.

The CSC application asks for substantial information about your academic background, experience, proposed study and development impact.

Applicants are asked to provide information including their university qualifications, employment history, publications and prizes where applicable, and how their experience relates to the programme they intend to study in the UK.

This is where preparation matters.

Before you begin writing, you should be able to explain:

What problem do you understand from your work, research or community?

Why does that problem matter?

Why do you need this particular master's degree?

What knowledge or skills are you currently missing?

How will the course help?

And what are you realistically going to do with that knowledge when you return home?

If those answers don't connect yet, spend some time thinking before you start filling boxes.

Choosing Your UK University and Master's Course

Don't choose your master's course because you saw “fully funded” and started searching for anything eligible.

You actually have to study the course. 😅

The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship can be held at approved UK universities or higher education institutions that have a relevant part-funding agreement with the CSC.

Your proposed course should make sense when placed beside your academic background, professional experience, development interests and future plans.

You should also research the university's admission requirements separately.

The CSC strongly advises applicants to seek admission to their proposed UK university at the time they submit their scholarship application or as soon as possible afterwards.

Remember that applying for a scholarship and applying for university admission are not necessarily the same process.

What Does the CSC Look for?

According to the current Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship guidance, applications are assessed using three broad criteria:

Academic merit
Quality of the proposal
Potential impact on the development of the applicant's home country

That third one is particularly important.

Development impact shouldn't be treated as a decorative paragraph at the end of your application.

The CSC exists within an international development framework. Your application should therefore make a credible connection between the education you want to receive and the development challenge you want to address.

Not every applicant needs to promise to transform an entire country.

Specific and believable is usually much more convincing than enormous and vague.

Can You Apply If You Already Have a Master's Degree?

Possibly, but you need to pay attention here.

The CSC states that it would not normally fund a second master's degree.

If you're applying for another master's degree, you will need to justify why a second master's is necessary.

Applicants who have already studied at master's level at a UK institution, or who have already received a Commonwealth Scholarship at master's level, are not eligible for this scholarship.

Do Commonwealth Scholars Have to Return Home?

Yes.

Commonwealth Scholars commit to returning to their home countries after completing their scholarship and contributing to their country's development.

The CSC specifically states that switching to a Graduate visa or another visa route to remain in the UK after the scholarship is not permitted under the scholarship conditions.

This is something applicants should understand before applying, not after arriving in the UK.

The scholarships are for master's programmes beginning in the UK in September/October 2027.

Check your academic eligibility.

Research your master's course carefully.

Start gathering your academic documents.

Think seriously about your development impact.

Research your chosen UK university's admission requirements.

And please don't wait until the final week before introducing yourself to the application form.
